Halloween actually started from different festivals for memorializing the dead and is found in different cultures all over the world. For example Mexico has the Day of the Dead thought to have originated from the Aztec's.
On my tour one night I had a girl mention she was a bit of a psychic so when we got to the 1790 Inn and I finished telling everyone about a room with a particular spirit (not that the haunting's are just limited to that room) I turned to this girl and said "I get it about the children and the candy but why is that room booked years in advance on Halloween? She said in the Pagan religion they believed that the veil in between our world and the spirit world is at it's thinnest so that's why everyone wants that room on Halloween. I mentioned in my last post Savannah was a quirky city. Last year we hosted the Pagan Pride Festival. I didn't even know they were persecuted.
Anyway, festivals are held all over the world and have for centuries with the thinking that if you hold a party or memorial for the spirits of the departed they will be happy and not bother you for the rest of the year. From what I've been hearing it's not working. I've also heard from several different sources that places that are "usually" haunted, "aren't" on Halloween. I think spirits are dead serious (pun intended) and aren't interested in all this non-sense. But keep this last piece of advice I try to impart on all my tours. "You don't need to worry about the dead, they can't hurt you, it's the living you need to worry about" (with exceptions I'm going to write about in my next post).
If you know someone who departed this world who you think might be interested in a date, try this site: http://www.ghostsingles.com/. Have fun out there tonight!
