This one comes from Cody. He grew up in a house in rural Kentucky that his father got a really good deal on, a house and 30 acres for $30,000, not bad. It only had 3 owners, the one that is presumably still haunting it, Cody's family and the couple that bought it after them and it has sat empty for a long time with a really bad reputation in town for being haunted. Actually Perdue chicken corporation owns it today. They use the 30 acres and the house sits empty.
The original owners were two twin brothers, never married and the last surviving brother died in the house found by the neighbor 3 days later. In the spot he was found dead Cody's family used to have a moisture problem. His father looked for causes, kept ripping up the carpeting, replacing it and finally gave up.
Then they a built a shelving unit over that spot and Cody and his brother used to store their toys there. One night he and his father were in the other room and a toy fell off the shelf, he heard it and put it back. It happened again. This time he surrounded it by a bunch of toys so it couldn't fall off. The next sound they heard was the entire shelving unit crashing down. They left the spot alone after that.
He said he doesn't remember but his mother told him when he was very young she would catch him talking to someone in the kitchen but when she asked him, he would never admit to any one being there.
They never really had big problems. He did say that if they couldn't find something they would go on and on about it and wait a little while and go to the front door and there it would be. A nice little service as it were.
The real problems started with the same sex partners who lived in the house after them. When they complained about all the problems they were having to the neighbor (who found the brother dead) she could only say "you must be doing something wrong". One of the partners was so upset one day by the kitchen cabinets opening and closing by themselves she called the other one at work who told her "just get out of the house". She did and was just up the road when she was broadsided by a grain truck and killed. No one ever went back. Their stuff still remains in the house. Everyone in town blames the ghost and the house has sat empty ever since.
I have a few of thoughts on this. First I don't think spirits are in charge of life and death. As far as the bad things happening to this one particular couple there are two explanations. One, the spirit did not like their lifestyle. There is a house here in Savannah that a gay man had a lot of problems with but no straight couples since (or they're not talking) have had. The other one Cody added just before we parted after the tour was over. He said that his family had pulled a trailer up to the house and primarily lived in that and just used the old part of the house for about 4 hours a day. The second couple used the old part exclusively. I have heard of buildings here in Savannah that when the employees stay late to catch up on some work things start falling over or loud knocking can be heard.
The theory goes that your personality goes with you when you die so lifestyle intolerance could be it. Finally spirits will share "their space" to a point and show their displeasure beyond that.
